Sigh. 2011 has been leagues worse than 2010 and I really didn't think that was possible.  That alone should probably have clued me in.

So far in 2011, I dropped my older Sony Vaio (backup) laptop and broke the screen, my 6 year old Dell got a serious virus I can't get off, my newer Sony Vaio laptop died last week (it will boot only partially then turn itself off), I reluctantly bought a new laptop I couldn't afford yesterday, but it's not what I'm used to even though it's a Vaio as well (I assume it's Win 7 causing all the stability issues), the A/C in my car is going flakey and nobody can figure out why it stops working sometimes and now, today, my Sony 505 ereader died.

That recital does not include other pretty serious stuff that's going on, but it covers the technology side.  Can somebody please make it stop now, because I'm about at the end of my tether. :(

That's probably my whine for the year and I return you to your regularly scheduled programming now.  Hope life treats all of you on my friends' list a *lot* better!

Argh! I can't do much else, but I do send good thoughts your way.

Thanks! Gratefully accepted. :)

I'm sorry things aren't going well. I wish I could make it stop. You should feel free to get in touch with me when you have computer trouble. Some viruses are hard to get rid of, but all of them can be dealt with in one way or another. I saw one a couple months ago that changed router settings so that any computers connected to the network would get reinfected whenever anyone tried to use the internet. That's easy to fix but hard to detect unless you're looking for it.

Thank you. The Dell desktop somehow caught 'Whitesmoke Translator'. It's over 6 years old and it was going creaky on me anyway, that's why I haven't really tried very hard to clean it as I was using it very sparingly before the laptop death. It's disconnected from the network and turned off right now. Once I have a little time, I'll see what I can do.

I'm more concerned about the Vaio laptop because it seems some files I thought were on my web server do not seem to be which makes me unhappy. It boots to the main screen, loads icons and programs and then at some point (always slightly different) the screen goes black and it turns itself off. I hope local computer guru can somehow access the HD and pull the data off.

I haven't encountered that particular scenario before so I'm a bit stumped as to what the issue could be. I ran several checkdisks and they couldn't find any issues. Tried to defrag when it was still loading but it died both times 3% in. It was running Avast and updating/scanning several times a day, Zonealarm firewalled, AdAware Pro running with occasional MalwareBytes and Spybot S&D scans when I remembered to turn them on so I don't think there was a virus/malware issue, but these days, who knows?

Btw, I had to turn off avast email and net shields on this new Vaio which runs Win 7 because it was either not connecting to the web/not downloading email at all or doing so extremely slowly. Haven't done any research yet. Is that a known issue between Win 7 and avast? Thanks!

I'm too tired to answer all of this right now, but one thing that I can quickly say is that the laptop's problem sounds like it might be overheating. Can you tell if its fan is running normally? Shutting down when the processor gets above a certain temperature is common behavior and laptops are prone to overheating problems. Replacing the fan in a laptop is sometimes fairly easy and inexpensive and sometimes a real pain in the butt.

The fan was definitely going wonky before the issues started, and I wondered about overheating, but the turning off happened most often when it was waking up from sleep and it didn't feel hot where at other times it definitely felt very hot and the machine was working. I did have to replace the fan in the older Vaio laptop, but it would merrily get super hot without ever shutting down (to the point where you could smell something plastic going melt-y. :) Guess the processor in the newer model is more sensitive.

Hope you got some sleep. The kittens obviously know that I have a full day and a 10 hour drive tomorrow, so that's why they are partying at 4am. Thanks for the answer, I'll definitely bring that up with Ricky.
